Letter from Frank to his mother and sister
Description
An account of the resource
Frank wrote this letter on November 15th, 1918 to his mother and sister. He wrote the letter while he was serving in France during World War I.
Frank begins this letter by saying that the war is over – something that he had been anticipating for a while. He is not sure when he will be getting home, but he believes it will be sometime before Easter. It is interesting that Frank, a Jewish man, is referencing Easter, a Christian holiday – the holiday that celebrates Jesus rising from the dead, instead of a holiday, such as Passover. This could perhaps due to the culture Frank is living in and the people he is surrounded by. He also mentions twice that he is going to stop writing so much. It is possible that now that the war is over, there is a lot more to do (i.e. clean up and reconstruction) and he doesn’t anticipate having a lot of time. It is also likely that he doesn’t feel the need to write so often because the war is over and so that fear of what might happen is dispersed.
He complains about the letters he is receiving from his mother and sister. He says that he wants to hear news from home – information that is relevant to him and the family. This is something that Frank has complained about in past letters. It appears that Frank feels cut off from home and knowing what is going on helps him feel relevant and connected – as if he is not an ocean away.
The letter is based off of what Frank is thinking and feeling. The war is finally over and he is anticipating going home in a few months’ time. But he is still in France, separated from his family and feels that distance.

Letter from Frank to his mother and sister
Description
An account of the resource
Frank wrote this letter on November 7th, 1918 to his mother and sister. He wrote the letter while he was serving in France during World War I.
Again Frank mentions the fact that he still has not received a letter from them and he doesn’t understand why. He said that he had received a letter from his brother, Meyer, and that he had recently gotten a long letter from his mother and sister. Frank appears to be experiencing a hint of jealousy because his brother recently received a letter and he has not, but he also expects to be getting one soon. Frank probably feels the distance between him and his family and he wants to bridge that gap by receiving letters from home. He also speaks about the weather and how it is getting colder, but that they are in a good location and they will likely remain there throughout the winter and until the end of the war. There is the common belief that the Allies will soon be victorious over the Germans. He tells his mother and sister that the soldiers all have bets about when the war will end. They expect the Germans to surrender soon and they anticipate that they will all be back in the United States within a year’s time. Frank appears to be looking forward to the future in this letter. When he talks about leaving France, he says that he hopes to go back one day. He also begins to make plans from when he finally does get home. He tells his mother that as soon as he gets home he wants to move into a new home and so he asks her to get a few things together so he can make the place look real. He also says that when he gets home he will be able to help his mother in the kitchen. In a seemingly joking tone, Frank adds “The experience I have had in the kitchen will enable me to go on strike if I am not satisfied with the “mess” you put out.” He is making plans to attend a school of journalism when he gets home and is planning on arranging it all while he is still in France so that his plans will not be disrupted once he is home. He finishes the letter by saying, “if anyone is sore at me, tell them to get over it, for when I come home I will be to busy to look em up and apologize.” Frank is anticipating coming home and all sorts of plans once the war is over.
This letter, written by Frank, is based on his experiences. Throughout the letters, he continually expresses his frustration because he does not receive regular letters from his mother and sister. The lack of communication leaves Frank feeling separated from his home and from his family. Something quite unique in this particular letter was his looking forward to the future. He can see the end of the war is near and he is preparing for when the day comes and he gets to return home.

"The Private and the Cook", by Frank Eisenberg
One day a Private said to the Cook, “That slum we had today was the finest mulligan I ever tasted, but positively. And not only that, the stewed tomatoes were marvelous, something about them that was different, and the biscuits, say, I don’t know, Cook but honest they're from out of this world. Never did I eat such biscuits. And, the bread pudding, in my whole life never did I taste such pudding. In fact the whole meal was wonderful. And, the coffee, boy, it was swell, maybe a little weak, but after all, it was a week day anyway, so I didn’t mind much. I tell you Cook I think our outfit has the best meals in the whole goddam Army.
Whereupon the Cook Expired.
The moral is don’t expect strong coffee. Be satisfied with a good meal.

The Saga of the Good Ship Bergen
I’ll tell you a tale of the seven seas,
A saga bold and true,
A story of the Bergen
And it’s valiant hardy crew.
From all the land men gathered round
Each to his bidden chore,
To sail against the dirty Jap
And, quickly end the war.
They came from east, and from the south
And, from the north and west,
From whence they sprang it made no odds,
They were the nation’s best.
While far away in Tokyo
Word of the Bergen’s gallant crew
Spread quickly far and wide,
Till nary an eye among the Japs
From that day was ever dried.
They feared not the awful bombers,
Nor the atom’s mighty din,
It was only the thought of the Bergen
Told them they could never win.
On a winder day in ‘45
When the shakedown cruise was done,
They sailed for San Francisco,
‘Twas a forty eight hours run.
At Oakland they were loaded,
With guns and a fighting crew,
And, to uphold Navy tradition
Some of the men were loaded too,
Loaded some with bourbon, were,
And some with Scotch or rye,
As they sailed into the Pacific,
Where they went to do or die.
Six days they sailed the ocean blue,
Till they saw famed Diamond Head.
Left behind their hopes and prayers,
Left their loved with hearts of lead,
Left behind the days of childhood,
Forward to the zone of war,
Where the years of loot and conquest
Left the mark of blood and gore.
They took over Honolulu,
It was quite a sight to see,
How they basked in lovely sunshine
One the beach at Waikiki.
Loading troops at Honolulu,
Heading west again to war,
Never knowing what tomorrow
They were ever living for.
Joined the sacred Golden Dragons,
It was thrilling on the brine,
They became a whole day younger
They crossed the famed date line.
One the Eniwetok Atoll,
Tiny speck amid the blue,
Won by blood and sweat of comrades,
Back in 1942.
On the Saipan with our fighters,
Muggy, sticky, humid, hot,
Heard the snipers in the foothills
When the Japs would take a shot.
Watched B29’s majestic
As they rose and sailed away,
To plant their bombs in Nippon’s bosom,
Hearts were thrilled in us that day.
Back to Pearl and amphib practice,
Off Maui for several days
Waiting for the next assignment
Impatient at the Navy ways.
Meanwhile far back east in Europe
The G.I.’s showed their stuff,
Till the Nazi gang of hoodlums
Cried that they had had enough.
Then the Bergen was appointed
It was thrilling, too, and fun,
To take home Pacific veterans
One thousand men whose work was done.
So back home across the ocean
And, again the Golden Gate,
Liberty for some and pleasure,
For two weeks our life was great.
Then again we saw Seattle,
(Where broken hearts from long ago
From the days when we were rookies
Even then, some were slow)
Loaded now with troops and transport,
Back across the ocean blue,
Back to Pearl and Eniwetok,
The Ulithi Atoll, too.
Recreation parties on old Mog Mog,
Lots of men, how would you feel,
Nary a dusky lovely maiden
If you had the sex appeal.
All the beer that one could ask for,
Just he sort to wile the hours,
Since there was no other game.
So they sweated out the hours
So they sat, 500 strong,
Till the word ws sent to Nippon
The Bergen soon would be along.
Hirohito called his council,
Called them in the morning hours,
Used his heaven-sent baloney,
Used his most persuasive powers.
Said he to Tojo and the others,
As they stood in deathlike calm,
“I velly sorry, I no likee
American atomic bomb.
But bad news I have for you,
Soon will come the big ship Bergen,
So we retreat in honorable fashion,
Most of our Jap Navee sunk,
Atomic bomb is minor matter,
When compared to the of Bergen drunk,”
So he sent an urgent message,
To the allied heads of State,
Asked for terms fo the surrender,
‘Ere he feared ‘twould be too late.
Said atomic bombs raised havoc,
Said the bombers wrecked his realm,
He would happily surrender
If they’d leave him at the helm.
So mid pomp and powered splendor,
On the Old Missouri’s deck.
They all met and signed the papers
To take over the Nippon’s wreck,
And, in those documents ‘Twas mentioned,
The reason for the proud Japs fall,
It was not the fighting Russians,
Or atomic bombs at all,
The Mikado heard a rumor
That if now he didn’t quit,
They were going to send the Bergen
And boys, that was really it.
He had but ruined cities,
Of his empire was bereft,
But if the Bergen had ever landed,
He wouldn’t have a damn thing left,
So consulting his ancestors,
On what caused the awful hitch,
He found that far from son of heaven,
He was a plain son of a witch,
So he gave up his whole empire,
Surrendered every single man,
And, to this day the Bergen never
Has gone to Japan.

The Lost Letter

A Short Short Story By Frank Eisenberg

Clark walked over to the large window of his luxurious suite overlooking the river. It was the first trip to the big city in many years. Mining contracts, consultations and wars had kept him in the far off countries for a decade or more. We mused over the letter he had just read. He wondered what his life would have been if---

The letter read:

Clark dear:

Last night I promised to give you my answer today. You wanted to know before you left on your first overseas assignment, which you explained might well be of several years’ duration. As you know, since father passed away, the burden of keeping up our home fell upon me. I promised father I would take care of mother, and I have never forgotten that happy smile as he closed his eyes for the last time as he realized his companion for so many years would be sheltered and protected. I couldn’t give you my answer last night because there were so many things to consider.

With mother an invalid I felt it was my burden and I had no right to load it upon you. You had your future before you, a chance to do big things in the world, and if I truly loved you, it would have been most selfish of me to expect you to assume further responsibilities. When I look back through the years dear Clark, I recall so many golden happy days, it is difficult for me to select one as the most memorable. The proudest day will always be when you first asked me to become your wife.

But I often recall that fishing trip when we bet who’d land the biggest fish. Yes, You won. (Mine got away.) The bet was a kiss, our first. I wonder if you remember that as vividly as I. And then your college days and

Page 2 –The Lost Letter

the summer vacations and the fun we had during those irresponsible years. We were kids then, not grown up as we are today. Just think, I’ll be-can I really be that old? And, at last your big break when you were offered that chance you dreamed of, an engineering spot with International. Now we planned to make that first trip our honeymoon.

And I remember how patient you were when mother’s accident prevented our marriage as we had panned. After our lovely dinner last evening you again asked me to marry you. Well, Clark, I thought it all over and my answer is yes. In fact, I’m already packing my bag. Please come to dinner tonight, mother wanted to give us her blessing. Loving, Mary.

Clark had lost that letter years before. Just tonight it had turned up in one of his original pieces of luggage.

The letter was dated August 1922.

The phone rang. It was the hotel switchboard operator. There was a telegram for Mr. Russ. They would sent it up at once. A bellboy handed Clark the familiar yellow envelope.

It read: “Clark Russ III born twelve minutes after four. Weight seven pounds, three ounces. A real chip off the old block. Mother and child doing well. How is grandpa?

It was signed Mary.

Letter from Meyer to Sister, Hilda. August 25, 1916
Subject
The topic of the resource
From before his enlistment and indeed before going to war had come into the potential future.
Frank talks about his apartment and proudly of his new Edison record player.
Talks about Frank’s work schedule and the insecurity of trying to run a business at a young age.
Updates Hilda about how mom is doing; that she is in good health. Talks about Flora being sickly, getting her tonsils removed.
Meyer writes somewhat wryly about mother’s kindness to a nearly deaf old lady who lives nearby who comes by for company and isn’t treated well by her family.
Mother is planning on opening a grocery, Meyer muses, “it seems to me that all Jews get it into their head to own a grocery- a grocery of all businesses.”
In a short aside, Meyer wonders why people have so many kids, saying that they don’t have a chance in the world. Later Meyer encourages his sister in raising her kids, with husband Herman.
Meyer writes about the financial struggle of going out east to visit given the needs at home. He comments that he has been in Minneapolis for two years as of this letter. Finally Meyer closes the letter by describing the setup of his apartment.

Letter from Frank to Mother and Sister, August 21, 1917
Subject
The topic of the resource
Frank writes about getting several letters from friends and family. Hilda, his sister, sent a cake through the mail, but he is worried it will be “hard as a rock” by the time he gets it.
Frank updates them that he has not yet got in touch with Meyer despite their being stationed near one another.
Frank also apologizes for sporadic contact. At this point Frank was preparing to be deployed to Europe. “I don’t know when I will be in New York again”, “nothing definite about going anywhere. We may be here all winter or may move in an hour.”
Aside from general news, Frank talks about financial worries, and the ease of going into debt while in the army, “done as easily as in civil life.” Providing an insight into the society of the time Frank relates that the phone company has pooled $1500 for a mess fund to provide things that the army does not, “cake, pudding, fruit, etc”
Frank mentions that he wishes he had a camera, a continuing desire throughout his letters to home.
Description
An account of the resource
Dear mother and sister,
Just had my picture taken again sitting on our oil stove. I hope it comes out good. Am enclosing a couple of pictures. never even remember their having been taken.
I heard from Hilda Francis, Oscar Rose, and Dave Mandel yesterday, and wrote a few letters to some friends. Hilda sent me a cake, but now it will be in the mail over Sunday and by the time I get it it will be hard as a rock.
Have not heard from Meyer as yet. He is probably doing his best to get in touch with us so don’t worry. It may be that you will have to go without hearing from either of us for great lengths of time, but we will both do our best to keep in touch with you.
I don’t know when I will be in New York again. You see I am only going to receive $15 a month now and will have to give up a great many things.
I am not going to get into debt. That is very easily done in the army and, as in civil life, it is a bad thing.
Nothing definite yet about going anywhere. We may be here all winter or may move in an hour.
Just had dinner: chicken, cream potatoes, gravy, tea. The telephone company had collected fifteen hundred dollars from the employees to give us for a mess fund. A mess fund is used to buy little things that the army does not supply such as cake, pudding, fruit, etc. When the money has all been spent, another fund is collected.
My cold is as bad as ever, especially at night, when I can hardly talk.
I wish I had a camera so I could get a few pictures. I guess I’ll borrow one of the boys and get a few views.
I hope you are tyring to make good in your lessons and don’t waste any time. Just keep on trying hard to learn and you will soon get it down pat.
Let me hear from you soon.
Will close now as I am going to clean up.
Love to you from
Frank

Letter from Frank to Mother and Sister, April 1, 1919
Subject
The topic of the resource
Frank writes that he is coming home and that he will be out of contact for the next few months. This letter is likely an april fools joke given Frank’s apparent frustration at the lack of communication mentioned in later letters. It is impossible to be certain if this was indeed a prank, but assuming so it shows Frank’s morale and sharp sense of humor.
Description
An account of the resource
As you can see by the heading, we are on the first lap of our journey home. We left _____ on Friday, March 28, and after a three day trip across country in the famous French box cars we arrived here yesterday. This port is supposed to be the best in France and if we are lucky we should leave here within the next two or three weeks. We are to be demobilized at Camp Dodge and it sure looks good to see our baggage addressed to there. And all goes well we shall be together by the end of the month. You will get this letter in about three weeks and perhaps I shall follow soon after. Will do no more writing after this letter unless something develops and you can just as well lay off too, for the letters may never reach me. For surely I shall be on the way home before you can reply to this letter. The embarkation camp here contains about 3000 men and everything is fine. We are in tents. There are many playgrounds. The band is playing as I write and the weather is fine after the rain and now of ______. It is sure great to realize that after these four and half months of waiting we are at last on the way.
Let’s hope Meyer will be on hand to say hello with you and that the ship comes soon and goes sooner.
Love,
Frank
