Dear Art,

We are all fine and wondering how you are. Sorry, I haven’t written soon but for the past week I have been a little sick and I am sure, however, that yours truly will live to eat another billion hamburgers, or so. Well how’s the admiral? (By this time I presume you’re an admiral). Nothing much going on here. Over Easter vacation I hit the road with your dad and we had a swell time looking at pennies and telling jokes. I just got a job as an usher here & I now usher at everything at the Lyceum and all the fights and baseball games. It’s sure a swell job and a lot of fun as I go with a bunch of boys. I suppose the President’s death hit you all hard. I know it sure it me hard, all of us. Just the same Pres. Truman is doing a swell job and everything is turning out good. Well the baseball season ads opened here, only a few games have been played, but I will let you know how it’s coming. Write soon, and take care of yourself.

Your everlasting Pal,

V-mail (circa April 16, 1944) from Dick Sachs
Description
An account of the resource

Art Eisenberg's cousin, Dick Sachs, corresponded with him via V-mail (Victory mail) and said, "I suppose the President’s death hit you all hard. I know it sure it me hard, all of us. Just the same Pres. Truman is doing a swell job and everything is turning out good."

The 32th President of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, died on April 16, 1944.

Dick liked to joke, and called Art an Admiral. Dick's envelope shows that Art is now stationed aboard the U. S. S. Bergen.

Dick told Art how he was on the road with his Dad, had fun joking and looking at pennies. (Frank Eisenberg was a serious penny collector. In one of his letters to Art he told him about finding a penny worth $6.00.)

Dick also tells Art that he got a job as an usher at the Lyceum with a group of other boys and is thrilled. Interestingly enough the 1930 child bride blockbuster , "Dust to Dust," played at the Lyceum in Minneapolis & St. Paul.

YouTube link to "Dust to Dust.": <a title=""Dust to Dust!"" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFGOZB634rI" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFGOZB634rI

V-mail stood for Victory mail. V-mail was used to reduce the volume of mail transported overseas and censor the mail going to service men.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-mail

Dearest Arthur:

Today has been one o those nice lazy ones – we stayed in bed until 10 and had breakfast – read the paper- made the bed and did the dishes and more rest. I ache so since the trip and I just hate to think of leaving again on Tues. Will try my best to stay home, but if I do have to go with the Sachs, we will be home Thurs.

Listened to Drew Pearson this eve. And he says the war will be over by Xmas – the Russians are 11 miles into Germany proper. Isn’t that wonderful? Soon Walther Winchell will be on –now our best pleasure is writing or reading letters and listening to the war news.

It is 4 weeks today since you left for Chicago – an it will be another 4 or 5 until we see you – if the times goes fast for you. we are glad. For us it seems so long. Our days are plenty empty – my housework and washing are so little. Remember how I use to nag at you for not being neater - I promise not to do when you get home.

Dad has been jumping up every time the phone rings – hoping it would be you. But I told him I had said for you to call next Sunday. At that time I didn’t realize it would be Dad’s birthday – but to hear your voice will be his best present.

You never mentioned whether or not bob has written? Or Marnie? Seems strange they haven’t.

Is there anything we can send you? Be sure to write us – any shave lotion, or toothpaste? Can you buy that at the ships service? How do you stand with money – need some? Or do you have payday soon.

Grandma and grandpa send you their live – x x x x x x Friday eve. They mailed our letter to you and they put in the stamps – we want to give them the credit. Mr. Portugal was up this morning – asking about you – said he dropped you a line.

Did you drop Harold Lichterman a card? Also be sure to thank Kitty and Keev for the set – or did you. 2008 Portland, St. Paul.

This letter is full of nothing – but I didn’t want to miss writing you- if only to tell you how swell we think you are. Lots of love to you and more tomorrow.

Mother

An account of the resource

Sara Eiseberg referenced the war in the following manner, "I istened to Drew Pearson this eve. And he says the war will be over by Xmas – the Russians are 11 miles into Germany proper. Isn’t that wonderful? Soon Walther Winchell will be on –now our best pleasure is writing or reading letters and listening to the war news."

Drew Pearson and Walter Winchell were very popular radio news casters during that time. Here are links to the radio board-cast of Drew Pearson and Walter Winchell from 1945, none were availalble from 1944.

Drew Pearson (circa April 30, 1945) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpeFcPFMYYc . Walter Winchell (May 6, 1945) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4qqJBjOl7o

Mrs. Eisenberg talks about how she misses Art. and says, "Our days are plenty empty – my housework and washing are so little. Remember how I use to nag at you for not being neater - I promise not to do that when you get home?"

She told Art to call next Sunday, Aug 6, 1944, for his Dad's birthday. Asked if he has heard from Bob and Marnie, asked if he needed anything, said Mr. Portugal would drop him a line, wanted to know if Art wrote Harold Lichterman, if he thanked Kitty and Keev and gave Art their address.

There were times when Art wrote two letters a day, everyday. His mother was always on his back about writing and questioned him about writing relatives and friends. If she saw someone Art knew on the street, she gave them Art's address and told Art to expect to hear from them. Art was a devoted son and writer.

Dear Art:
Just back from the office where I grabbed a flock of thin thin paper; On Plymouth this morning I picked up Sammie Kantor, you went to Talmud Torah with him. He is discharged, lisps badly, and is going to Miller Vocational. He told me to tell you that Arthur Goldstein left for Farragut last Thursday. You may get a chance to look him up since Sammie says you know him also.
We are just taking it easy today, are rather tired from getting in so late Friday nite, we wrote you we were at Doc Littman’s’ that night. We are wondering if you will call us today, altho mother says she wrote you next Sunday is my birthday and you might want to call then. Call whenever you can get a line, someone will always be here, but don’t call person to person. Call our number Collect and we can accept or refuse the call at regular rates, then if we want to take the call, you will know someone is here to talk, otherwise, have them call you back later when someone will no doubt be at home.
We will send you a newspaper of the Aqua as soon as we get one downtown, mother says the kids on the street collected the money and then didn’t send the papers. We will go direct to the paper office.
- - - - -
6:00 P.M.
We had a lazy day, didn’t so a thing till late in the afternoon when we ran over to Sam Bight’s to leave his sister a box of candy, had a nice visit, then to Sam Broud’s, Max’s brother, who had a serious operation, we should have gone before, but when we finally did make it, he had gone to work today for the first time so we didn’t see him after all. Then to Plymouth for bread and here we are home again, wondering yet if we will talk to you. Listening to the Philco Hour now, and will then let this go for a while when we will add a few words and drive to the P.O. mailing. Will try not to forget stamps today, last night we forgot.
I hope the friends you are making are nicer boys, I told you a thing about what you would run into. Wish you had a chance to take up boxing in the Navy. I still think a good sock goes a long way with a fellow and wish you had a chance to develop one for yourself. Brot (sic) brought a flock of thin paper from the office so we will be able to write longer letters, and I didn’t get the idea from your gramp, believe, me. More later
Dad

July 30, 1944 letter to Art from Frank Eisenberg
Description
An account of the resource

Frank Eisenberg causally references the war when he tells Art that he picked up an old schoolmate from Talmud Torah, Sammie Kantor. Said, Sammie was recently discharged, had a lispe and planned to attend Miller Vocational. Said Sammie told him a guy he knew, Arthur Goldstein, left for Farragut (where Art is stationed) last Thursday and to look him up.

Later in his letter, Frank said that he warned Art about the sort of fellow he might run up against once he was in the Navy. That a good sock goes a long way and that he wished that Art could take up boxing in the Navy.

Two other things also worth nothing in Frank’s letter. He told Art that he planned to listen to the Philco Hour and suggested that when Art called next week for his birthday, August 6, 1944, that he call Collect.

The Philco Hour was a once a week radio show that featured the Philco Orchestra. Here's a YouTube link with the orchestra playing a favorite from, “Connecticut Yankee that musical version of Mark Twain’s story, Thou Swell.” Philco Hour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NkKD8aUxRs

A collect call was a telephone call where the calling party called at the called party’s expense. At that time collect calls were only possible as an operator assisted call. A person-to-person call was an operator-assisted call in which the calling party asked to speak to a specific party and not simply to anyone who answered. The caller was not charged for the call unless the requested party was reached. This method was popular when telephone calls were relatively expensive. Station-to-station was a method of placing a telephone call, with or without assistance, in which the calling party agreed to talk to whoever answered the telephone. Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operator_assistance

Dear Art,
I guess that this letter is just a little overdue. Several times I have thought of writing you but never actually did.
I certainly hope that you are feeling better now. We sure are a couple of kids. I had measles last Spring and now you with Scarlet Fever. And, of all times to get it—right around the holidays.
So you had to go and join up, too.
They’ll probably get you soon enough, that is unless the war is well on its way to the end. How do you like the school? Do you have much military activity?
I really have a swell set up here in V-12. I suppose you know something about it. Sine you are graduating in June, I think that you ought to consider joining up. If they still continue the program next summer, you could get two years of college training.
Tell me all about Minneapolis and also your photo business. Are you still trailing the shoe–maker’s daughter? If she’s cute, then don’t let anybody tease you about her. Say hello to Marge for me. My roommate sued to carry on a correspondence with her but doesn’t anymore.
I suppose that you heard about our little fire. For two weeks we lived in the gym. Nothing was damaged in the building proper—that is it below the roof, of which there isn’t anymore. The whole roof just got too hot to handle. At present they are building a new one.
I hope that I can get to see you sometime during the 1st half of 1944.
Well, I’d lie to hear from you, so please write soon-
Bob

An account of the resource
A letter dated Jan 3, 1944, to Art Eisenberg, Breck High School Senior, from his cousin, Bob Weiss.

Description
An account of the resource

Arthur Julian Eisenberg was a member of the Breck High School’s Graduating Class of June 1944.

Breck's School History indicated that Breck was/is affiliated with the Episcopalian Church. In the early 1940s Breck was located at the intersection of Como Avenue and Herndon, a then-undeveloped site near the St. Paul city limits. Its history also indicated that Breck had a military program from 1938 until 1959.

Breck’s High School’s History: http://www.breckschool.org/about-breck/history-of-breck

References in letters from Art’s cousin, Bob Weiss, Robert Schanke, Director of Camp Braemar, and Ted, a former classmate from Breck, confirms Art's attendance at Breck and that he participated in their military program.

At one time Art attended the Talmud Taroh (time period unknown), a school for Jewish students, which was located in North Minneapolis where the Eisenbergs lived.

Talmud Torah School: http://www.talmudtorahmpls.org/

Frank Eisenberg references Art's attendance at the Talmud Taroh School in a July 30, 1944 letter.
